Today, to Alex Acosta

The Real Cost of Those Eggs pt.42

There is nothing new that I can bring to this constantly changing story. But I understand that the Republican Party is opening an oversight committee about this case. I see all the Republicans' regulars are invited, even Bill Barr made the list. My question is, why are there no victims/witnesses of the crime invited? And what about Alex Acosta?

In the early 2000s, Jeffrey Epstein was a wealthy financier with powerful friends. He had homes in New York, Paris, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Palm Beach, Florida. He was known for lavish parties, mysterious wealth, and for surrounding himself with young women. But beneath the glamour, disturbing allegations began to emerge. By 2005, police in Palm Beach were investigating Epstein after parents accused him of sexually abusing their underage daughters. The evidence piled up: dozens of potential victims, hidden cameras, and flight logs showing powerful men on Epstein’s private jet. The case should have been open-and-shut.

But then came Alex Acosta, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida.

Instead of pursuing federal charges that could have put Epstein away for life, Acosta approved a secretive non-prosecution agreement in 2008. Epstein would plead guilty to just two state charges of soliciting prostitution, serve 13 months in a county jail (with a generous work-release deal), and avoid federal charges altogether. The deal was kept from the victims — a direct violation of the Crime Victims’ Rights Act.

Years later, when asked why the deal was so lenient, Acosta reportedly told interviewers that he had been told Epstein “Belonged to intelligence” — an unverified claim that added fuel to the conspiracy theories surrounding the case. Trump and Epstein were seen together at parties in Florida and New York, often surrounded by young women. One video from 1992 shows the two laughing and pointing at cheerleaders during a party at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate. According to court filings, one accuser alleged that Trump and Epstein assaulted her when she was 13 years old, though the case was later dropped. Fast forward to 2017: Donald Trump, now President, nominated Alex Acosta to be his Secretary of Labor. Despite the cloud of the Epstein plea deal, Acosta was confirmed by the Senate.

In 2019, investigative journalist Julie K. Brown of the Miami Herald published a bombshell report detailing the secret deal Acosta had made. The public outcry was swift and furious. Epstein was arrested again, this time on federal charges of sex trafficking.

A few weeks later, Alex Acosta resigned as Labor Secretary. Under pressure, he defended the 2008 deal by saying it had been “the best they could do at the time.”

I try like hell not to go down this never-ending rabbit hole, but I have to question: Is this the best that America has to offer its citizens?
